Thank God for friends!

So, the basement rec' room and laundry room were bare concrete floors. Perfect for tiling. The hunt for tile began...Craigslist, of course. We considered trying to piece something together with a mosaic of tiles on hand, plus, left overs from others, often for free. But then, I found these tiles via a wholesaler with a storage unit of tiles he was selling. (weird?) They're lava stone, with a little bit of sparkle in them. Derek wasn't sure about the sparkle bit, but I totally loved it, and after he was unable to convince me with some other (very dark and gloomy) gray tiles, he finally conceded to the sparkly lava stone. yay!

Fortunately, our good friend Tim volunteered to help Derek tile the basement. He even had a tile saw from when he tiled his kitchen previously. So, the boys started on the floor. We did a great herringbone design using tiny 1x1 earth tone tiles with the 13x13 variably colored lava stone. After three weekends, much soda pop, beer and pizza, Tim finally decided to spend some weekend time with his family. That left the edges for Derek to finish up...and, since his work schedule is insane...well, it was my turn.

Today I fired up the tile saw. After some instructions from Derek last night, and lots of warnings and misgivings about whether or not I should even try it (pshaw!) --it was a breeze! Well, okay, not a breeze, but, not nearly as difficult as he had me believing it would be. Tonight, I finished it off! woo hoo!!! Now, it just needs to set up, and then we'll have to grout. Color? Hemp. I love it.
